Love
The first thing that came to my mind when thinking of the word was love heart sweets
I used the Image above to make the love heart sweet spell the word flux instead of the usual things they say |

Spikeyy!!
I found this quite difficult to think about in terms of a visual language but started to experiment with pins
Then I started to look at holly leaves and arranged them to make the word

Toxic
I decided to keep this one simple and just look at the colours used to portray the image of toxic through the colours used, I stuck to Greens, Blacks, Yellows because they are toxic colours and remind me of things like acid and mould and the colours Black and Yellow indicate danger and warnings.
after looking at these images I decided to go with this one for my final piece |

Plastic
I found it quite difficult to think of initial ideas for the word plastic so I started with some obvious things,
I made the word flux out of plastic lego bricks. |
Then I made it from plastic Hamma beads. |
You place a sheet of brown paper on the peg board that the beads are on then iron over to melt the beads together |
Then I made the word flux from plastic fridge magnets. This will be final image because I like how simple it is. |

Childlike Flux
I began with a spider diagram of everything that was childlike I could think of, other words that the same or similar to the word childlike and any other childlike things. I then looked at some old school books to see how a child would write and the shape of the letters and asked family and friends to interpret how they think a child would write the word 'Flux' using primary coloured wax crayons.
And then I looked at fonts that were related to children's handwriting and copied them into my research and added colour, as I think that bright colours reflect the idea of something being childlike greatly.

Vintage flux
Some words that come to mind from the word Vintage.
Classical
Floral
Old/worn/outdated
Victorian
When I'd found a font that I think best suited its purpose and style I traced it onto a piece of paper and tea stained it then slightly burned the edges so that it looked old and vintage.
I also think that floral patterns have quite a vintage element to them so I took photo's of some floral patterns on my clothes and around my house.
Image from a prospectus from Nottingham trent University that I had on my wall. Above are some scans of patterns in my clothes |

URBAN
I got a few graffiti books out of the Library and traced letters from the Urban typography to spell the word flux in different ways.
I was then going to use these to create my own Urban font, but decided that they looked good as a collection of images and scanned them into the computer to create a montage of Images
I took a picture of a wall from google images and used it in my final piece to make it look more Urban, but so that the text stands out more against the background I made the wall black and white.
Banksy
I looked at the work of Banksy because his work is based a lot on typography and reflects the images I'm beginning produce in this project, and the materials and the way in which he works is similar to the final image I would like to create for my Urban flux.
Flowing
for flowing the first thing that came to mind was water so I started to experiment with water.
I wrote the word flux in flowing letters onto a piece of paper with a washable pen then ran water onto it but the word completely disappeared almost immediately before I could to take a picture, So I wrote the word on a new piece of paper using a sharpie pen and took these photographs whilst the water washed away the ink from the word.
I put these images into photoshop and merged 2 of them to get this flowing image,
What I like most about this image is that you can see the water around the edges flowing into the text. |
Musical flux
For the word musical I started by looking in music books and online at the shape and types of musical notes.
After looking at music notes I started to experiment with making the word flux look musical...
Final musical flux

After coming up with a list of words, I took pen to paper and starting experimenting with ways I could portray the word dysfunctional.
I tried to make this look (Broken) |
I mixed up the letters but left the first and last letters in the same place so that its readable. |
Mirror imaged to make the word appear to be backwards. |
looking at missing pieces I jotted this idea down of a jigsaw puzzle that spells the word flux and has missing jigsaw pieces. |

DYSFUNCTIONAL
I started of by taking one of the words that I thought would be most difficult to create visually and made a spider diagram of all the words that meant the same or similar and the things that it made me feel or think about.
For the word Dysfunctional I came up with the idea of making the word look
(Unfit for purpose, broken, something missing, not very legible)
